Tires so bald the pickup skids into the crosswalk at a red after rain.

MAP OF LOS ANGELES 1
Road maps on paper. 2020. 12 x 16 in.

LA MAPS is a collection of pieces that represent Los Angeles. Assembled of fragments of paper road maps depicting sections of LA, Orange, and Ventura Counties, as well as the Southland generally, each MAPS collage adheres to uniform dimensions so as to constitute equal portions of LA’s extent. By the scale of several road maps, where 1 7/16 inches denotes 1 mile, roughly 9.57 collages comprise the land area of LA; and again, roughly 83.35 collages comprise the land area of LA.

Yet take a closer look. The limits of the collages belie the confusion of their content. No route here is exact. Surface streets and freeways from various reaches of LA overlap and connect in a melange of location and direction. In the manner of a photographic negative, this information appears backwards. For being constructed of documents of a place, the collages themselves do not render a documentation of it, but rather an impression. Like the grid of a remembrance, they are a reflection upon the metropolitan landscape.

Maps are made of inches. Cities are made of miles. Places are made of the experiences we have of them.
